Semester 2 lalu, mungkin sekitar tahun 2013 kalau gak salah, aku pernah ikut speech contest di UNNES. It was an unforgetable moment. Panas dingin gimana gitu pas ikut, tapi seru! Nih dia di bawah aku kasih tahu script pidato aku. Asli lho, bukan jiplakan! Check it out!
Ladies and gentlemen
It is a great honor for me to stand right here in front of you all to deliver a speech on “Should local language be deleted in 2013 curriculum?”
Ladies and gentlemen
To begin this speech, I would like to ask all of us about one thing. Have you ever heard about “BhinekaTunggallIka”? Yeah, I think all of us have heard
about it; besides, we understand the meaning of “Bhineka Tunggal Ika”.
As we know, “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” is Indonesia’s slogan which means “Unity in Diversity”. Therefore, we know that our nation consists of different cultures,
ethnic groups, and local languages; nevertheless, we are still one that is Indonesia.
Ladies and gentlemen
We know that Indonesia is a rich nation, not only because of its natural resources, but also its diversity. Because of that, Indonesia grows to be a beautiful
nation; moreover, Indonesia can attract the attention of other nations with all its local cultures and wisdoms.
Ladies and gentlemen
Have we ever asked ourselves why Indonesia can become a beautiful nation like a little girl who grows up to be a teenager who has a good behavior? The
answer of that question is”Culture”! Yes, “Culture” is like a mother who teaches moral values to her children so that her children become a figure with
strong characteristics. Moreover, one thing that makes Indonesia different from other nations is its “Local languages”. Then, what will happen if local
languagesaren’t learnt at school? Should it be deleted in 2013curriculum?
Ladies and gentlemen
Actually we don’t need to ask if local language should be deleted in 2013 curriculum because the answer has been stated in the constitution of 1945 article
32 subsection (2) which declares “State respects and preserves local languages as national cultural wealth”.So, if the government deletes local language
in 2013 curriculum, it means that the government doesn’t apply the constitution.
Ladies and gentlemen
Here I have the other reasons as to why Local languages should not be deleted in the curriculum.
First, we are the ones responsible for preserving our culturesincluding local languages.
Ladies and gentlemen, if we stop at this point without trying to preserve our local language anymore, what will we see in the future of our nation? We
will see nothing. Indonesia won’t be a beautiful nation anymore, Indonesia will lose its character and Indonesia will be like other nations which do not
have cultural diversity. Moreover, the young generation will be affected by the globalization without taking a shield which one is line with the wisdom
of the local culture.
It’s so ironic. Indonesia was born with its cultural diversity; but it has to die because we kill its cultural diversity. IfI may, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I will call this “a culture suicide”.
Second, there’s philosophy in the local language that can develop character of the young generation such as etiquette in Javanese. As we learn the etiquette,
we will learn about “Courtesy”. Isn’t it compatible with the 2013 curriculum which focuses on the character and moral development?? Another example, if
the local language is not studied at school, how can the young generation understand Javanese language and script?? It means that if the young generation
doesn’t know how to read and write Javanese script, the Javanese script will eventually fade away.
Third, there are many people who depend on the local language such as teachers and students of Javanese or other local language departments at university.
Ladies and gentlemen, the local language elimination will affect some local language teachers. They will lose their job; otherwise, they will be forced
to teach different subjects that are not compatible with the background of their education. For example, Javanese teacher has to teach Mathematics. Then
if it happens in our educational environment, it will raise a problem about professionalism. In fact, professionalism is one important thing to createqualified
young generations.
Ladies and gentlemen, if the local language is deleted in the curriculum, what will the students of, say, Javanesedepartment do?? Should they change their
study? If they change their study and choose another department, it means that they waste their effort, time, and money.
Ladies and gentlemen
I think the government must concern with the quality, facilities, and props that can support the learning activity than make itself busy changing curriculum
every year.
Deleting local languages in the curriculum is the same as killing the character of our nation!! It is the same as tearing up “Bhineka Tunggal Ika”!!!
So, think twice before it’s late! Think twice before deleting the local language in 2013 curriculum!!
That’s all my speech. Thank you for your attention.
